On Feb. 26, Yellowhammer Fund and Generation Action at Auburn University hosted a reproductive rights advocacy event on Auburn’s Campus Green. The event was part of a “reproductive justice bus tour” that launched June 24, 2023, the one-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade being overturned.
The Yellowhammer Fund, an abortion advocacy and reproductive rights organization, focuses its efforts in the Deep South. Its mission aims to provide women with the opportunity to make reproductive decisions without outside pressures, shame or interference from state legislatures.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Yellowhammer Fund visited Auburn’s campus with a bus called the Repro Raven. The bus provided reproductive items, including emergency contraceptives, condoms, pregnancy tests and menstrual products to students.
The partnering organization Generation Action is a network of young activists organized by Planned Parenthood who collaborated with the Yellowhammer Fund to bring their bus tour to campus.
Scottie Holbert, a representative from Generation Action, said that the most urgent aspect of reproductive justice right now is providing people with necessary healthcare products.
“In terms of what we can do boots on the ground, it's access,” Holbert said. “We have grab and go bags that are really discreet, and you can come up and talk to us and get one or two condoms at a time, or you can grab a handful and leave.”
Holbert expressed the importance of availability, especially in rural communities. Holbert has a passion for advocating and being an available source to provide healthcare products, including contraceptives, childcare materials and menstrual products, for anyone who needs them.
“This is a cause that I believe in. The more research I do about it, the more I double down on the mission,” Holbert said. “By me standing here for an hour a week, I can help prevent people from having expensive medical costs or even a baby.”
The Yellowhammer Fund and Planned Parenthood advocate for similar outcomes, in which women have full bodily autonomy and the right to make decisions about their healthcare.
The Yellowhammer Fund specifically works to ensure the communities they are working with are educated, empowered and have aid to support those who need it.

The fund’s current programs focus on preventing unintended pregnancies as well as supporting those who are pregnant or are already parents, emphasizing the timely importance due to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
One of these programs offers free emergency contraceptives by mail to residents of Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida panhandle on their website. They have delivered more than 30,000 contraceptives since March 2020. Other programs include family justice, reproductive care for marginalized people and material support for low-income families in need.
Holbert encourages those interested in advocating for reproductive health rights to contact their state representatives by email or phone. To learn more about the Yellowhammer Fund's mission, visit the website.
