From art scenes to sports, there is plenty to do this month in the Auburn-Opelika area. Read on for a list of local events happening in June.
1. SummerNight Downtown Art Walk: Held on June 5, from 6 to 10 p.m., SummerNight is a free art festival held in downtown Auburn. The event that will host local artists, musicians and merchants and feature children's activities. Downtown Auburn will become an entertainment district for the event, meaning that guests can carry alcoholic beverages as they browse. SummerNight is hosted by the Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center, Auburn Arts Association, Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church and the Auburn Downtown Merchants Association.
2. Food Truck Friday: Presented by the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, Food Truck Fridays will be held on June 5 and 19. Food trucks, vendors and live entertainment will gather in Courthouse Square from 5 to 10 p.m.
3. City Market: Auburn’s City Market will be held every Saturday until Aug. 29 in Town Creek Park from 8 to 11 a.m. City Market partners with the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department and other vendors to encourage citizens to shop local.
4. Burger Wars and Touch-A-Truck: This joint event in downtown Opelika will be held on June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. Touch-A-Truck exemplifies its motto of “Climb, touch, explore!” by giving community members a hands-on look at various trucks, cars and machines. This year’s Touch-A-Truck will also host a sensory-friendly hour from 9 to 10 a.m. In this hour, there will be no horns, sirens or flashing lights. In addition to the trucks, food will also be available when Burger Wars joins the streets. Beginning at 11 a.m., grillers will compete for cash prizes and trophies. Tasting tickets will be available for purchase at the event.
5. Argentina vs. Iceland: On June 9, Argentina and Iceland will face off in Jordan-Hare Stadium for Argentina’s last match before the World Cup. This event marks the first soccer match ever played in the stadium. The match will begin at 7:45 p.m.
6. Float in Movies: Families are invited to Samford Pool, located off of Wrights Mill Road, to swim and enjoy movies on June 13 and 27. Admission is $5 per person, and guests are encouraged to bring their own pool floats. Doors will open at 7:45 p.m. and the movies will begin at 8. The June movies are Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Greatest Showman.
