River cane plants in Alabama are becoming extinct, but a professor at Auburn University is not letting them go down without a fight.Wildlife scientist Mark Smith said his decision to start a research project on restoring the river cane in Alabama was based on the conservation need for the plant.

Buy a book, get a book free. The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance is offering just that."If students buy a book between now and the end of July, they can mail in a form and get a free book mailed back to them," said Margaret Hendricks, general book manager at the Auburn University Bookstore.

A dog is a man's best friend, but dogs play a much more critical role for Auburn University researchers: they locate species in greatest need of conservation around Alabama.By sniffing for their scat, or poop, dogs can provide specific information about species' habitats and lifestyles.

Between spring and fall semesters at Auburn University, many students who stay in town for the summer struggle to find local entertainment. "Most everyone I know goes to Birmingham or Atlanta a lot for fun activities," said Megan Neely, a senior in Human Development and Family Studies.

Music, Dance Make Miracles

Instead of going to a sunny baseball game, sitting by the pool or throwing a Frisbee with their friends, some students chose to attend the Miracles of Music benefit concert Sunday in the Student Center Ballroom.Although attendance was not high, Aubie was present to cheer up the shy crowd.

The College of Veterinary Medicine held its annual open house Saturday at its campus on Wire Road.Through the rain there were a variety of activities and demonstrations to help educate future veterinary students."It's really beneficial because it provides a glimpse of what you can expect once you're a student in the vet school," said Shannon Hinton, a recent veterinary school admit.

Fans of rest, relaxation and improved flexibility celebrated the World Tai Chi Day Saturday.At 10 a.m., participants around the globe took a break from their busy lives to enjoy the peaceful art of Tai Chi.Auburn citizens did their part by getting together at the Jule Collins Smith Museum.Tai Chi is a form of relaxation exercise that is most often compared to Yoga.
