Whether students are decorating their own apartment or preparing for their first night out, there are so many ways to learn about their likes and dislikes. To do this on a student budget can be tricky, however. Thankfully, Auburn has no shortage of thrift stores carrying everything possible, from t-shirts to kitchenware to CDs.

Turning over a new leaf: The Artist’s Harvest Exhibition begins this October

From Oct. 1 until Nov. 4, Jan Dempsey Community Arts Center (JDCAC) will hold its first-ever Artist's Harvest Exhibition, an opportunity for local artists to showcase their artwork and express their love for Halloween and the fall season. A reception and market, where these JDCAC-affiliated artists can sell their pieces and gain exposure in the world of creativity, will also take place on Thursday, Oct. 9, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Auburn University began its 169th year of classes on Aug. 18. Established in 1856, Auburn has served as a place of higher education for many generations of students. Time has created differences between the generations, but they all had one thing in common: hopefulness for the upcoming school year. This year, Auburn students are looking forward to many activities, from spending time with loved ones to establishing routines to participating in various student organizations.

A world of wonder: Mary Dansak’s new book plants seeds of appreciation

Mary Dansak, Alabama native and Auburn resident, published her new book, “Box Turtles, Hooligans, and Love, Sweet Love,” in January of this year and will participate in two events at the Auburn Public Library in the fall. Filled with a collection of columns she has written for the Auburn Villager newspaper, the book embarks readers on a journey of appreciating the little things in life and nature.

Look to the skies: Auburn Raptor Center celebrates 25 years of eagle flights

This fall, the Auburn University Raptor Center (AURC) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the eagle flight, a “uniquely Auburn” pre-game tradition at each home football game. With the return of its event "Football, Fans and Feathers," the AURC is launching a new fundraising campaign – active now until Nov. 29 – to raise awareness and donations for the Center's raptors, commemorate the history of its beloved birds and ensure the longevity of the tradition.

Family STEM Career Connect Day encourages new interests

On Saturday, August 23, the Opelika Public Library hosted “Family STEM Career Connect Day,” organized by the East Alabama STEM Ecosystem (EASE), with the mission to promote interest and passion in the STEM industry. Attendees participated in interactive activities run by partnered organizations, student groups and Auburn colleges, all aimed at highlighting the importance of science, technology, engineering and math.

Get to know those who know: Campus Orienteers

Recruitment and orientation are major parts of the college experience. Not only for incoming students, but for the orienteers interacting with these students. For Auburn, the “big three,” would be student recruiters, Camp War Eagle counselors and Pi Chis. These orienteers see hundreds of students a year and when incoming students arrive on campus, these faces are the typically first ones seen.
