Election announced to replace Hubbard

Gov. Robert Bentley has announced the schedule for a special election to replace the Alabama House seat formerly held by Auburn Republican and former House Speaker Mike Hubbard. Hubbard was removed from his office after being convicted of 12 felony public corruption charges.

A primary election has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 13, 2016.

If there is no run off or no primary is needed, the special general election will be scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, 2016. If there is a runoff because a candidate didn't receive the majority of their party's primary votes, the runoff will take place November 29, 2016.

In that case, the general election would be pushed back until Tuesday, February 7, 2017.

Candidates from one of the two major parties must qualify by Thursday, July 14, at 5 p.m. The parties must then certify their candidates to the secretary of state's office. All other third-party and independent candidates must qualify with the secretary of state by September 13, at 5 p.m.

Hubbard's sentencing is set for July 8, 2016, at 10 a.m.
