A spirit that is not afraid

From the archives: Muhammad Ali at Auburn

Muhammad Ali delivered a lecture, titled “The Intoxications of Life," on Auburn's campus in May 1973. He spoke frankly to students about everything from his boxing career — Ken Norton famously broke his jaw only two months before — to the human condition.

He also talked briefly with The Plainsman's then-sports editor, John Duncan.

"It's kinda funny, when you think about it — a man who barely got out of high school with a D average, lecturing to a college audience," Ali said to Duncan. "But education doesn't only come from classrooms. People like Napoleon, Jesus Christ and Malcolm X, men who had no schooling were some of the wisest men in the world. Their education came from traveling and talking, worldly education ... and that's where I get mine."
