Cupcakes Make a Bang at Taylor's Bakery

Love Potion #9.

Tiramisu.

The two are often part of a solid beginning for a romantic evening. But at Taylor's Bakery, they're part of the more than 20 flavors that make up Cupcake Explosion.

Cupcake Explosion is held once in May, October and January each year. For the May and October Events the bakery churns out 120 dozen cupcakes, but scales back to 50 dozen in January.

The January event is way to welcome students back to Auburn, Jan Taylor, founder of Taylor's Bakery, said. But she said the primary purpose of the event is to show the bakery can bake more than white and black cakes.

"It's about a three day event in the kitchen," Taylor said. "This morning, when we put them in the case it was like, 'Whew, we can breathe!'"

Taylor said her daughter Alison did the majority of the baking, but that they and the new owner, Eade Vincent, all decorated.

Cupcake Explosion has been held during each of the 13 years the bakery has been open. Taylor said they will include some of the same popular flavors, but also like to incorporate new selections.

In addition to the more amorous sounding flavors, Taylor's also sells a variety of chocolate cupcakes with different frostings, carrot cake cupcakes, strawberry cupcakes, red velvet and a banana and peanut butter flavored "Elvis" cupcake created after the King's favorite sandwich.

However, early-morning sales didn't seem as robust as usual. Taylor blamed the cold weather.

But there were still several sweet-tooth sufferers who braved the cold in pursuit of cupcakes.

Fifth-year senior in architecture Amy Songer purchased a dozen cupcakes in different flavors.

"I've done this before," Songer said about celebrating Cupcake Explosion, "and I love it."

Victoria Lisle, a graduate student in English, said she did not know Cupcake Explosion was today, but bought a carrot cake cupcake when she walked past the display case on her way to work on her syllabus at a table in the bakery. Lisle said she thought it seemed the most breakfast appropriate flavor.

"It was really, really good," Lisle said about her carrot-topped confection.
