Lack Of Funding Delays Skate Park

It has been a few years since the hey day of Tony Hawk and other professional skateboarders, but skateboarding hasn't lost much ground.

Auburn skaters, however, do not have a place to call their own.

The Auburn City Council approved plans for a skate park to be built on Glenn Avenue in October 2009.

Six months later, approval is the most ground the skate park has gained.

Greg Darden, development manager for Donald H. Allen Development, said the project can't go anywhere if there are no funds to pay for it.

"We've received a lot of interest in the site," Darden said. "But we've received essentially no help with funding at this point in time."

Without funding, the park will not be built.

"The cities don't have much interest in funding the project right now, and we have not found any federal money at this point in time to help fund the project," Darden said.

Although there is no funding for construction, there is interest.

Auggie Winter, junior in civil engineering, said he would love to see a skate park in Auburn and thinks the University should get involved with the construction.

Winter said he thinks insurance risks associated with skate parks might be delaying development.

"It's very easy to get hurt skating, and a common death for a skate park is a young new kid falling and getting hurt," Winter said. "Then an over zealous parent comes back blaming the park and suing."
