A spirit that is not afraid

Introducing freshmen to the family

Auburn University is showing a major effort to familiarize first year students with the Auburn atmosphere.

The Division of Student Affairs and student-run event Welcome Week are hosting the second annual Convocation for upcoming freshmen Aug. 16 at 11 a.m.

The purpose of the convocation is to establish a basic knowledge of the University and bring students closer to each other in hopes of establishing new lasting relationships for the beginning of the upcoming year.

Kirby Turnage, SGA president, will join the event in hopes of welcoming new students to a new but refreshing way of life.

"I look forward to joining the newest members of the Auburn family as we celebrate all that is Auburn, especially the incredible opportunities that lie ahead for these students," Turnage said.

The students will also learn to recognize their role in the community, as extending support and helping those in need is an obvious goal for Auburn students.

By helping incoming students, Convocation provides a common ground for all students to enjoy themselves and understand the meaning of Auburn pride.

Auburn President Jay Gogue will officially welcome first-year students to the beginning of their college careers.

"Convocation jump-starts the Auburn experience for new students," Gogue said. "It begins the process of stimulating intellectual curiosity, connecting students to the campus community and engaging them with learning and service toward the world around us."

Ainsley Carry, vice president for student affairs, will also be in attendance to encourage students to make an effort to not only succeed, but to stay involved in any way they can.

"We are delighted to welcome the class of 2015 to the Auburn family," Carry said. "Every new class brings talents and gifts that help make Auburn better. My hope for every new student is that they get involved while at Auburn and most importantly make a commitment to go to class."

Although other welcoming events like Camp War Eagle are used to introduce students to campus, Convocation reinforces the thought that becoming part of Auburn is much more than being a student.

"Of the few events that can trigger the beginning of the 'Auburn experience,' Convocation is at the top of that list," Turnage said.
