What watches say about personality

Watches have been a staple fashion item throughout time. They can be trendy, classic or say something about a person's personality.

John McDuffie, assistant store manager at Dillard's, categorizes watches based on how they appeal to certain customer types.

"Anne Klein is kind of for the more mature customer," McDuffie said. "SCAV is another brand we carry that somewhat caters to the more mature customer with more business-type watches."

McDuffie said the most popular watch brand among his customers is Michael Kors.

"Michael Kors is one that really targets the younger customer, but it also really bridges the gap in customers of all ages," McDuffie said. "I think Michael Kors is more toward the fashion customer, not necessarily toward an age group."

Kelsey Bowen, junior in chemical engineering, received her tortoise Michael Kors watch four years ago from her parents.

"I literally wear it with everything," Bowen said. "I usually put it on in the morning for class and then wear it out that night."

Bowen said a lot of her friends have chosen Michael Kors as their favorite watch as well.

"It's definitely a popular brand," Bowen said. "I saw a ton of girls wearing the same watch during rush, even."

McDuffie said the band on a watch can accommodate a certain lifestyle, and people who buy a watch for its function are probably buying it for an athletic purpose.

"I think the other thing is for an active customer, a customer that is exercising or running around and working outdoors ... (is that) the polyurethane-type bands have been really popular with more of an athletic and active person," McDuffie said.

Will Simmons, junior in supply chain management, wears a Citizen Eco-Drive because it is so practical for daily use.

"When someone asks me what time it is, I wouldn't pull out my phone, I'd look at my watch," he said.

Although the watch was a gift from his dad, Simmons still sees the value in a more expensive piece.

"It was definitely an investment piece," Simmons said. "I'd say it's a casual watch, but I wear it close to everyday."

Simmons said certain watch brands can signify success.

"I'd say Rolex would cater to an older generation, just because it's more of an expensive price point," he said.

McDuffie said it's about personal preference..

"Some people like that loose fit of a metal band and they're comfortable with that, but a lot of people like a watch to fit and not move around on their arm, so those people are going to go with the leather band," he said.
