Warm Bodies review: Zombies on Valentine's?

Winter is usually the time for all of the big dramatic Oscar nominated films to have their time, but sometimes it is a bit daunting to watch dark thought-provoking film after dark thought-provoking film.

While most movies that premiere in January and February are the flops that studios hope to make a spare buck on, there are the occasional few films that might surprise you. "Warm Bodies" is a perfect example of such phenomena.

What some might consider "Twilight" with zombies instead of vampires proves that not all undead are created equal. With obvious correlations to Romeo and Juliet, "Warm Bodies" doesn't try to take itself too seriously.

The story revolves around 'R' (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie with inner turmoil searching for more in his afterlife. Everything changes when he rescues Julie (Teresa Palmer), the girlfriend of his latest victim. Of course romance ensues as the star-crossed lovers can't be together for obvious reasons. Side characters that represent the Nurse and Friar help round out the story and add a bit of humor.

While Warm Bodies is more of one comedic films out right now, there's still a definite way for this movie to go. The comedic elements are limited for the hour and a half movie and it mostly relies on the concept of a zombie in love as the main humor; however, anything more crude humor of violence would probably move the PG-13 up to R rating.

Still, this movie is a great pick for anyone looking for a good comedy for Valentine's Day. Rather than dragging your significant other to whatever gushy chick flick, ladies be kind to your men and request this one instead. There's enough action and humor that he won't reconsider the relationship after walking out of the theatre. The root of the story is still a romantic one, even if it is about zombies. And somehow this post apocalyptic piece seems more realistic than any Nicholas Sparks movie I've come across.
