Auburn tops Samford 6-2

Auburn took the lead against Samford with a two-run seventh and capped the game with a three-run ninth inning to beat the Bulldogs 6-2 Tuesday, April 16, in Birmingham.

Solo home runs by Brandon Haarer and Christiaan Durdaller had Samford leading late, but Auburn answered with a two-run seventh inning that put the Tigers ahead for good.

Auburn (23-14) added to its lead with three runs in the ninth inning, giving Auburn its first win at Samford since 2010.

Trey Cochran-Gill got the start for Auburn, but only worked two innings, giving up two hits and striking out one batter.

Chris Williamson relieved Cochran-Gill in the third inning and promptly gave up a home run to Samford's Brandon Haarer, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Auburn tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice from Ryan Tella that scored Hunter Kelley, who led off the inning with a double.

Samford took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the fifth when Christiaan Durdaller hit a solo home run off Auburn reliever Dillon Ortman. The home run was the only hit given up by Ortman in two innings of work.

Damek Tomscha evened the score with a solo home run in the seventh, and Ryan Tella hit an RBI-single that scored Hunter Kelley and gave Auburn a 3-2 lead.

Auburn broke the game open with a three-run ninth, giving the Tigers a 6-2 lead. Cullen Wacker delievered a two-run double, and Blake Austin finished it off with an RBI-single. Wacker finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Austin finished 4-for-5 with one RBI.

Justin Camp pitched the final three innings for Auburn, giving up no hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Auburn, which has won four of its last five games, begins the first of back-to-back road series with a three-game series at No. 10 Mississippi State Thursday at 6:30. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
