An Alex City man was shot and killed early Saturday, March 8, by an Alex City police officer.
According to the Alex City Police Department, Emerson Crayton Jr., the man who was shot, was involved in a fight outside of the Huddle House on Highway 280.
An Alex City police officer, whose name has not been released, approached the two men when Crayton fled to his vehicle and began driving at a high speed.
Police said he was attempting to hit the officer with his vehicle. The officer then shot at Crayton.
Crayton was taken to UAB where he was pronounced dead.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is still investigating the officer, who has been placed on paid administrative leave.
A vigil was held in honor of 21-year-old Crayton and guests gathered around the Alex City Police Department in his honor.
According to WSFA, the family and community have many questions regarding Crayton's death, but they will not be answered until the investigation is completed.
