A 4,290 square-foot restaurant will be coming to the Heart of Auburn shopping center on South Gay Street, but with no drive-thru.
The Auburn City Council approved a resolution allowing Orange-Auburn LLC to modify drainage and utility easements for a new restaurant at 340 and 344 S. Gay St. 6 to 0 with 1 abstention at the Oct. 7, City Council meeting.
A proposal to build a drive-thru restaurant on the same property garnered public opposition at an Auburn Board of Zoning Adjustment meeting in July and was rejected.
The new plan for the property will turn the lot at 344 S. Gay St. into a parking lot and the lot at 340 S. Gay St. will become a restaurant, according to documents from the Oct. 1 Board of Zoning Adjustment meeting.
Councilman Ron Anders abstained from the vote because he is the business development director for the company that serves as the Heart of Auburn's contractor, Rabren General Contractors, according to Anders.
"That's not going to happen," Anders said about the possibility of a drive-thru ever coming to the Heart of Auburn property.
Other items discussed at the 11-minute City Council meeting:
- Approved a 5-year loan of $435,000 guaranteed under a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development program to Langcourt Performance, Inc., a manufacturer of dirt bike and ATV engine parts located at the Auburn Industrial Park.
- John Weete and Dave DeBaets were both reappointed to another term on the Industrial Development Board.
