In the softball team’s first SEC season match, the No. 12 Tigers defeated the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi, Saturday night, March 14.
The on and off rain couldn’t stop the offense, which dominated throughout the game, calling the run rule at 14-3.
Among the 14 points scored were notable on-base hits, including back-to-back singles from Haley Fagan and Brandi Melero to get the game rolling in a scoreless second inning.
With Fagan and Melero on base, Jade Rhodes was able to nail a pitch over the fence, bringing in three for the Tigers.
Auburn looked like they were in good shape with a solid three-point lead, until Ole Miss answered with two to cut the score tight.
The Tigers then responded with four additional runs including Rhodes’s second home run for the night, bringing the score at a five-point difference.
Offense wouldn’t score again until the top of the fourth with yet another over-the-fence hit from Rhodes, bringing in two.
Rhodes’s third hit made her the first Auburn player to score three home runs in a single game since 2001.
Emily Carosone then delivered her fourth and team’s eighth grand slam of the season to round the score to 14-2.
On defense, the Tigers only allowed one home run from the Rebels in the fourth, and held the Ole Miss offense to end the game early.
Auburn will continue the series in Oxford Sunday, March 15, at 4:30 pm and then take the field again Monday, March 16, at 6 p.m.
