Caley Presley, 5, was pronounced dead at UAB Children's Hospital in Birmingham in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at 6:30 p.m., according to a news release by the Auburn Police Division.
APD responded to a call to assist paramedics at a residence at the 1900 block of Rosie Street at noon Sunday. They found Presley unresponsive and suffering from an apparent head injury, according to the release. She was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center, then the UAB Medical Center in Birmingham.
APD arrested George W. Barton and charged him with first-degree domestic violence and aggravated child abuse Sunday, June 7, according to the release
Barton, who is Presley's stepfather, was responsible for caring for Presley at the time of the injury, according to the release.
According to the release, Presley's body will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science Medical Examiner's Office in Montgomery for an autopsy.
Detectives are in the process of obtaining arrest warrants against Barton for capital murder, according to the release.
Barton is being held at the Lee County Detention Facility on a $40,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
