The National Weather Service in Birmingham issued a heat advisory for Lee County among other counties across west and central Alabama from noon, Tuesday, June 23, to Wednesday, June 24 at 9 p.m. Central Standard Time with heat indexes from 103 to 107 during the afternoon in Auburn and Opelika.
According to the National Weather Service, high heat and humidity could cause illness.
A heat advisory means residents should expect a period of hot temperatures.
"Drink plenty of fluids ... stay in an air-conditioned room ... stay out of the sun ... and check up on relatives and neighbors," the National Weather Service said in their report.
The NWS also said to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion or stroke.
"Take extra precautions ... if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening," the NWS said. "Wear light weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible."
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling rest breaks in shaded or cool environments when working outside.
The NWS also stated heat strokes are an emergency and to call 911.
Highs of 95 are expected today and temperatures will lower to the 80s by Friday.
