Former U.S Representative for Alabama’s 6th district, Spencer Thomas Bachus III will donate his congressional papers to the University at a ceremony in the Caroline Marshall Draughon Auditorium in the Ralph Brown Draughon Library today at 1:30p.m.
The Special Collections and Archives department at Auburn will house the documents and begin the preservation process so that they will be available for future study.
Bachus was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992, and left earlier this year after choosing not to run for a 13th term.
He was former chairman and a long-term member of the House Financial Services Committee, and the papers he donates are expected to provide insight into the 2008 financial crisis.
Bachus graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Auburn in 1969 and was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau social fraternity. He then received his law degree in 1972 from the University of Alabama.
At the ceremony Bachus will also speak about his time in Washington: “Over two decades in congress, a journey of a lifetime: The Papers of Congressman Spencer Bachus.”
