Toomer's Corner to re-open at noon tomorrow

The intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue, known as Toomer's Corner, will re-open to traffic at noon tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 15, according to David Dorton, director of public affairs for the city of Auburn.

"We're glad to have this done on schedule and in time for school starting," Dorton said.

Dorton said there will still be free parking downtown through the weekend, and all levels of the municipal parking deck will remain open until Monday, Aug. 17. On Monday, metered parking will resume and the top two levels of the parking deck will be leased spaces only.

According to Kevin Cowper, assistant city manager, local clergy from several churches will bless the corner Monday, Aug. 17, at 8:30 a.m. The blessing will occur in front of Toomer's Drugs and the street will remain open.

Another event, Come Home to the Corner, is planned for Friday, Aug. 21, and streets will also remain open during that event.

The corner has been closed since May 11.
