There will be another Iron Bowl in Auburn this year
Auburn will host the third annual Special Olympics Iron Bowl on Sunday Nov. 22 at Duck Samford Stadium.
Gates open at 12:30 p.m., with kickoff for the flag football game at 1:30.
The event will help bring awareness to Unified Sports, which pairs athletes in Special Olympics with their high school or college peers, according to Dana Stewart, special programs coordinator with City of Auburn Parks and Recreation.
Stewart said Unified Sports operates at colleges across the country, including Mississippi State and Florida State.
"We're really trying to get Unified Sports in to the state of Alabama," Stewart said.
She said Unified Sports helps bring athletes together to learn from each other and build friendships.
"It gives these athletes the opportunity to compete at a higher level," Stewart said.
The team that raises the most money will win the rights to the coin toss for the game as well as bragging rights, according to Stewart. She said representatives from Auburn's women's track and field, swim and gymnastics teams will be there, as well as the Auburn High School cheerleaders.
All of the proceeds will go toward the state fund for Special Olympics.
"It benefits everyone, not just Tuscaloosa and Lee County," Stewart said.
