Biggin Gallery hosts 2015 BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition

As the end of the semester approaches, nine talented art students work to finish their senior thesis projects.

The 2015 Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Candidates Senior Thesis Exhibition, "YMMV: Your Methods May Vary," opened Monday, Nov. 16 from 5-7 p.m. in Biggin Gallery.

Jessye McDowell, assistant professor of art and head of the 2015 fall senior project committee, explains the BFA major and how the exhibition plays a part in the students' senior thesis course.

“The BFA is more of a focused and concentrated track with more studio courses,” McDowell said.

Students focus primarily on one medium during their time as a BFA major, which will be used in their final project, according to McDowell.

The exhibition is the student's final product of their senior thesis course, which has spanned the entriety of the fall semester.

Those contributing have spent the semester researching and developing their pieces with the help of a committee of professors.

Typically the BFA exhibition previews the art from four to eight candidates. Biggin Gallery will be hosting nine student candidates this fall.

Lauren Barnard, senior in fine arts and exhibition candidate, said the artists' diversity and size of the show are rare treats.

“This is a show like no other in Biggin," Barnard said. "So many artists of all mediums are being represented, which is unique to Biggin Gallery.”

One of the featured students, Cassidy Kulhanek, senior in fine arts, said the process of developing a portfolio of work for the show doesn’t stop after the piece is finished.

“Each individual piece doesn’t take four months to make, but the idea never stops growing," Kulhanek said.

Wendy Deschene, associate professor of art, said the project is more extensive than one would initially assume.

Deschene said there is a level of intellect that goes into making art which is often overlooked.

“It’s not just what they are feeling," Deschene said. "It’s research-based work."

Deschene also said viewers should be prepared for work from "critical young minds."

"YMMV: Your Methods May Vary" will be open for viewing until Friday, Dec. 4.
