City Council discusses tax abatements on Technology Park North

The City Council discussed tax abatements to be extended and amended on Auburn Technology Park North.

According to David Dorton, director of public affairs, technology parks are areas planned and set aside for industrial development.

"A technology park is essentially an industrial park specializing in technology based industries," Dorton said.

Dorton said a tax abatement lessens the tax burden, which helps the company as they spend money to, in this case, expand.

The expanding industries include Arkal Automotive, Kemmerich USA, and Borbet Alabama.

Dorton said Arkal Automotive plans to hire 15 new employees over the next two years, and Kemmerich USA plans to hire 32 new employees.

According to City Manager Charlie Duggan, the plant is investing $20,000,000 in expansion.

Through the tax abatement, their tax burden will be eased, which helps with the cost of expanding.

Dorton said once they have expanded, they will have new jobs resulting in new taxable revenue, so the abatement of taxes can lead  to more tax revenue.

"It’s intended to be a win-win for both the industry and local economy, job base and tax base," Dorton said.
