A spirit that is not afraid

Grammy Award winner performing in Opelika on Feb. 17.

The East Alabama Arts Association is hosting a rare event that combines the musical talents of three women.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts, Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins and Anaïs Mitchell will come together to perform on one stage during their Use Your Voice tour.

The tour is promoting the idea of greater civic engagement in cosponsorship with the League of Women Voters. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. and end about 9:00 p.m.

Phillip Preston, director of the East Alabama Arts Association said Americana music is experiencing a great resurgence in this country.

"This is the first time we’ve had the privilege of hosting these particular artists," Preston said. "Patty Griffin is a legend of Americana music, Sarah Watkins is well-known for her work with Nickel Creek and Anaïs Mitchell is a rising star we look forward to getting to know better. The quality of the talent and the variety of the music will make for quite a show, and a memorable experience."

Griffin just released her 10th album, “Servant of Love,” and is also an acclaimed Grammy Award winner. She has written several songs for the country girl group, the Dixie Chicks, as well as renowned artist Bette Midler.

Watkins is a founding band member of Nickel Creek. She has made numerous appearances on the live radio show “Prairie Home Companion.” She has also collaborated on projects with well-known artist John Mayer.

Mitchell is a new voice and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the younger artists to join the folk music industry.
