Harper Lee is dead at 89, multiple sources confirm

Nelle Harper Lee, famed Alabama writer, is dead, multiple sources in her hometown of Monroeville confirmed this morning.

Lee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "To Kill a Mockingbird," was 89 years old.

"Today, we mourn the loss of Alabama’s treasured author Nelle Harper Lee," said Gov. Robert Bentley on Friday, Feb.19, in a press release. "Harper Lee’s literary impact reaches far beyond the borders of our state and nation."

Professor Emeritus Wayne Flynt spoke about his famously private friend at the Auburn Public Library after "Go Set a Watchman," Lee's somewhat controversial sequel to "To Kill a Mockingbird," was released last summer.

“She transformed more lives by writing 'To Kill a Mockingbird' than probably the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or the Voting Rights Act of 1965 ... She really made it possible for us to move much more quickly on race than would have been possible,” Flynt said.
