A spirit that is not afraid

Cirque Mechanics performing in Opelika

On Tuesday, April 19, Cirque Mechanics will wheel into Opelika for a performance at the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts.

The show, titled "Pedal Punk," will feature a theme where cycling is presented as an escape from a technology-obsessed society. The show will revolve around The Gantry Bike, a massive mechanical structure of various wheels. The show will tell the story of a bike shop mechanic who interacts with cyclists and their bikes, ultimately repairing more than just their broken wheels.

“We are extremely excited to host such a wonderful event in Opelika,” said Phillip Preston, director of the East Alabama Arts Association. “I believe this show firmly represents what we love about art.”

Chris Lashua, creative director of "Pedal Punk," spent most of his career on a BMX bike. Lashua’s fascination with cycling and bicycles are obvious in "Pedal Punk," according to the Cirque Mechanics website.

Preston said this show is the first cirque-type show Opelika has hosted.

“This show is a first-of-its-kind event for the performance series," Preston said. "The combination of artistic elements, story-telling, acrobatics, and engineering is completely unique and should make for an exciting experience for everyone.”

Auburn University students are also enthusiastic about the show.

"I cannot wait to go see 'Pedal Punk,'" said Mary Giambrone, sophomore in public relations. "I absolutely love Cirque du Soleil, and I have heard this show is a lot like it."

Preston said the show has gathered a lot of hype in the community.

“We have had great response for this show from biking enthusiasts throughout the community, and from the extensive number of cycling clubs in the area," Preston said. "'Pedal Punk' will be a thrilling show that works for the whole family, so we invite everyone to come out and see the acrobats and ‘the wondrous machines that come alive on stage.’“
