A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on South College Street Wednesday night, according to the Lee County coroner, marking the second pedestrian traffic death in Auburn in less than a week's time.
A 51-year-old man from Auburn died in the incident, the coroner said. He was struck by another man, a 33-year-old from Auburn, in the incident along South College Street near Harmon Drive, according to reports.
The pedestrian, whose identity is being withheld upon notification of his family, was attempting to cross South College Street when he walked into the path of a 2003 Ford Escape traveling northbound on the street, police said. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene, police said, and cooperated with the investigation.
The victim was taken by ambulance to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. He died of blunt force impact at 8:18 p.m.
The APD arrested another driver, 24-year-old Nicholas Osceola Dean Lawhon, from Auburn, Wednesday morning after investigation of a fatal hit-and-run that occurred last week along Shelton Mill Road near East University Drive.
Police are still investigating both incidents, along with the Lee County Coroner's Office. The APD said it does not anticipate criminal charges with the South College Street incident.
