Spicer’s Music held a seminar with their partner Taylor Guitars to showcase their instruments and give guitar enthusiasts a quick lesson Tuesday night.
J.R. Robison, the mid-South salesman for Taylor Guitars, talked to guests about how to find the right guitar for them.
He used the “tone equation” to match musicians to an instrument.
“We use the 'tone equation' to match players to an instrument; the 'tone equation' is shape plus tone plus player,” Robison said.
Robison used the "tone equation" to match guests with one of the five guitar shapes.
During his 25-minute workshop, Robison said, different people can play the same string on the same instrument and produce a different sound. He then invited guests to look around the store and check out the diverse array of guitars and other instruments.
Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug founded Taylor Guitars in 1974. Each of their guitars is made by hand, and the computer mills and lasers give each guitar precise measurements. The process to produce one guitar takes about two weeks.
Robison described Taylor Guitars as an “American success story.” Taylor Guitars is the number one acoustic guitar manufacturer in the United States, and their best seller is the 814ce.
"It is big enough to compete with other acoustic guitars but small enough to fingerpick,” Robison said.
Spicer’s Music opened in 2012 with a vision of creating a place where the people in this area could gather to share ideas, experiences and knowledge within the music community.
"We picked up Taylor in 2013 and never turned back,” Tim Spicer, Spicer's music founder, said.
The store has grown and made a name for itself in the last several years. According to Spicer, the relationship between Spicer’s and Taylor Guitars comes from an undeniable love of music shared among musicians and enthusiasts.
“We really wanted to start something and provide lessons for the community,” Spicer said.
