Bear — Gov. Kay Ivey's beloved pet and Alabama's 'First Dog' — has died at the age of 14.

The Governor's Office announced Bear's death Friday afternoon from "ongoing health issues."

A 14-year old Chow mix who recently appeared in an re-election commercial with Ivey, an Auburn alumna, Bear was adopted in 2005 from a local vet after he was hit by a car.

"Bear was beloved by the entire Governor’s Staff and especially those who work at the Governor’s Mansion," Ivey's office said. "School children would many times get a glimpse of Bear during tours of the home. He brought a bright spirit to the mansion."

Ivey thanked the employees of Montgomery Veterinary Associates, who handled Bear's health care and comfort in the final few days of his life.

Ivey asked that if you want to honor Bear, please volunteer or donate to your local humane society.
