Auburn University Greek Life sent out a letter to fraternity and sorority leaders on Thursday notifying them that Greek letter organizations will need to move out of housing by Sunday, March 15, in accordance with ongoing student housing procedures. Organizations were also asked to suspend all in-person chapter activities and events.

The University’s Interfraternity Council stated in a letter that Greek Life “has been asked to treat on-campus fraternity houses in the same manner as University residence halls.”

The houses will remain closed until April 10 when University operations are scheduled to resume. Panhellenic chapter facility move-outs in the Village area are being overseen by University Housing.

Fraternity membership will not be able to return to their houses during the University’s remote instruction period, the letter read, and University Housing is managing Panhellenic chapter room access.

“Greek Life will be working directly with your chapter’s house corporation board and advisory leadership to identify a process to assist students needing to collect any belongings they will need during the transitional period,” the letter read. “All [Panhellenic] belongings needed for the transition should be collected in accordance with the communication sent by University Housing.”

Greek Life informed leaders that they should cancel or reschedule any chapter meetings, philanthropy events and social events their organization may have had planned from now until April 10. Council programs will either be rescheduled or set up through virtual methods, according to the letter.

Leaders were suggested to consider hosting executive meetings, new member education and other important gatherings through digital platforms such as Zoom, which classes are using for remote instruction. It also asked organizations to switch to a “paper meeting” for chapter meetings through the use of emails or other forms of communication.

The letter said that Greek Life staff will continue to follow normal operating hours from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. between Monday and Friday, taking questions and offering support to chapter leadership and house corporation members.

“Members with Greek Life staff will take place either remotely by video conference or by phone,” the letter read. “In-person meetings will not be available during this time period.”

Students involved in Greek Life activities with any additional questions on housing are asked to contact housing@auburn.edu for University facilities or greek@auburn.edu for Greek housing.
