Family members were extracted from a second story window during a police standoff Sunday night in which a suspect and police officers exchanged fire, after which the suspect was hospitalized.
The incident began when officers from the Auburn Police Division responded to a domestic incident call in the 2100 block of Wedgewood Court at 7 p.m. Sunday night, when they encountered a subject armed with a handgun, APD said.
The subject shot at officers and they returned fire, at which point the subject retreated into the house and refused to leave as officers set up a perimeter around the house.
Police said they were able to safely extract several family members from the house through a second story window. Once family members were outside, APD’s tactical team entered the home, secured the suspect and determined he was suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
APD, the Auburn Fire Division and emergency medical personnel rendered aid before the suspect was transported to Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery. Police do not know the suspect’s condition at this time, according to the press release. There were no other injuries.
The incident is under investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
