Auburn fell in the quarterfinals of the SEC Women’s Golf Championship with a 3-2 loss in the match play round to South Carolina.

Auburn’s loss came after a hard fought weekend in the tournament. Senior Megan Schofill finished as the individual runner-up on Friday, scoring a 54-hole total of 213 (-3). Auburn finished second in Friday’s round with a final score of 292 (+4) which fated the Tigers to face No. 4 South Carolina in the quarterfinal match play round of the championships.

Redshirt freshman Casey Weidenfeld got the Tigers off to a promising start, winning her match 5&3 over South Carolina’s Justine Fournand. It was Weidenfeld’s third match play win of the season, with her two previous victories coming from the East Lake Cup in October.

Schofill fell to South Carolina’s Hanna Darling 5&4. Junior Anna Foster, battling back after losing the first two holes of her match, ultimately came up short, losing her match 4&3.

Redshirt freshman Carys Worby played her first collegiate round of match play and built a 3-up on the front nine, but South Carolina’s Mathilde Classie fought back on the back nine, pushing Classie to win the match 3&1. Classie’s win over Worby clinched the victory over Auburn for South Carolina.

Freshman Katie Cranston also played in her first collegiate round of match play against South Carolina. Cranston, after being 2-down through the front nine, battled on the back nine, picking up three consecutive wins, to claim a 3-up lead. The match ended before Cranston reached the 18th hole.
