Opelika resident arrested in connection to fatal shooting

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest following a shooting in the Beauregard community that left one individual deceased.

On Nov. 30, deputies responded to the 911 call made at 1:03 a.m. at the 100 block of Lee Road 41 in the Beauregard community. Upon arrival at the residence, deputies discovered Marcus Jacquez Strickland, 43, of Opelika, deceased inside.

David Lavar Preston, 44, of Opelika, was named a suspect as the investigation developed. Strickland and Preston were believed to be acquaintances and not related.

The Lee County SWAT team responded and assisted investigators in detaining Preston at a residence in the 3900 block of Lee Road 177 in Cusseta, Ala.

Preston has since been arrested and charged with murder. He is currently held in the Lee County Detention Center without bond.
