The Auburn Tigers were unable to slow a hot-shooting Texas A&M team, falling 81-63 on Sunday afternoon at Reed Arena.
“We did a good job coming out in the first half and knocking down shots,” Tigers head coach Larry Vickers said. “But after that, we went cold. Teams are going to make us prove we can beat them from the 3-point line, and we’ve got to get back in the gym and make those shots.”
Kaitlyn Duhon scored a career-high 23 points for the Tigers, leading four of her teammates in double figures. Up there with her, Ja’Mia Harris finished with 11 points, while Khady Leye and A’riel Jackson added 10 points each.
Duhon also had six rebounds and four steals, leading Auburn in all three categories. With four steals Sunday, Duhon moved into second place in program history for single-season steals with 83, surpassing Katie Frerking and Hasina Muhammad.
Texas A&M posted a season high offensively, shooting 57% (29 of 51) from the field and scoring nearly 20 points above its SEC-leading average. The Aggies went nine of 18 from 3-point range and were perfect at the free-throw line, finishing 14 of 14.
Auburn shot 33.3% from the field and was effective from 3-point range early, knocking down five in the first quarter. However, the Tigers did not make a 3-pointer in the second half. Auburn finished 17 of 21 at the free-throw line, including 12 of 12 in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers capitalized on 18 Texas A&M turnovers, scoring 22 points off those miscues, and added 15 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds.
Auburn hit five 3-pointers in the opening quarter to take a 22-19 lead, matching its highest-scoring SEC quarter this season. Jackson accounted for two of those early threes. Texas A&M stayed close by converting all six of its first-quarter free throws.
The momentum shifted in the second quarter as the Aggies used runs of 9-0 and 10-0 to build a 40-31 halftime lead. Texas A&M shot eight of 12 in the period, while Auburn went four of 14 from the field and missed both of their free-throw attempts.
The Aggies continued their offensive surge in the third quarter, extending the lead to double digits and closing the quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 64-43 advantage into the fourth. Auburn outscored Texas A&M 20-17 in the fourth quarter.
Fatmata Janneh recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead four Aggies in double figures.
Auburn returns to the road Thursday, Feb. 19, traveling to Columbia, Missouri, to face Missouri at 6:30 p.m. CST at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers return home Monday, Feb. 23, to face Georgia at 6:30 p.m. CST at Neville Arena.
