New sorority members, having just received their bids, run out of the Auburn Arena on 2015 Bid Day on Friday, Aug. 14.

Photographing bid day was the most hectic event I’ve ever covered. The time the women entered the arena until they left took about 15 minutes, but it felt like only a few. There was certainly no do-overs with this assignment, since it only happens once per year! As the women left their seats in the arena and started running out the doors, I stood in the middle of the crowd as they stampeded by. There were a few times I thought I would be run over as I was looking through the viewfinder, but fortunately they all had their heads up and didn’t take me out. As I was headed toward the main doors of the arena, I took a quick detour up the stairs to get a wide angle shot of them streaming out the building, hoping that being up high would give me a good vantage point. After I took a few frames, I looked at my screen on the camera and knew immediately it was a good shot.
