After the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was suspended earlier in November, Beat Bama Food Drive (BBFD) and the Food Bank of East Alabama faced an influx of people in need. Although the Alabama Department of Human Resources plans to fully reinstate SNAP benefits after the resolution of the government shutdown, food insecurity in Auburn still continues, driving more community members to food banks and pantries for help.

On Nov. 11, the University Program Council (UPC) hosted its annual War Damn Coffee Jam. The event, held directly in front of Samford Hall, ran from 7 to 10 p.m. and offered Auburn students a fun break from studying. Attendees enjoyed the changing weather with free refreshments from local vendors, music from local bands and the company of fellow Auburn students.

The series of AU Alerts sent out Nov. 6 marked a catastrophic failure of Auburn’s security system. News of an active shooter struck fear across campus, to an extent likely unseen in years. Students cleared out of dining halls, hid in classrooms and reckoned with the fact that they and their peers’ lives might be in peril.

For 51 years, the CARE Humane Society has been dedicated to serving the community by sheltering cats and dogs without homes or owners and promoting the humane treatment of animals. The shelter first started as a volunteer establishment, but has grown into an animal shelter that strives to find a home for every adoptable animal.

On Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, Opelika celebrated American Veterans by hosting the first Freedom Fest Weekend. In past years, Opelika has organized an annual Veterans Day Breakfast and Veterans Day Program. Last year, with the help of Flags for Vets, a non-profit organization that purchases and raises the national flag on a lighted flagpole at the veteran’s house, a Freedom Fest Concert was also held. This year, more additions were made to the tributary festivities with the support of the City of Opelika, Flags for Vets, IS4S and ESPN, establishing a two-day-long tradition to recognize those who have served.
