Miss Auburn: Madison Gaines

Madison Gaines, junior in human development and family studies, received her Miss Auburn nomination from Auburn Singers and now promotes her platform “Auburn Gaines Perspective," which strives to create deeper relationships with international students. Gaines said she wants to make the Auburn Family the University promotes a reality by unifying every student and making inclusion a priority on campus. Gaines lived in China and is working on a minor in Asian studies. She said her time overseas greatly inspired her platform. “When choosing a platform for Miss Auburn, I wanted something tangible that could make a difference right here on Auburn’s campus,” Gaines said.

Unauthorized weapon spotted on campus, no threats identified

Auburn Police responded to a call this afternoon, Jan.28, about a person who possibly had an unauthorized weapon near the Student Center, according to a public safety advisory from Auburn University Public Safety and Security. The person was not acting in a threatening manner.

​EASL classrooms to be in Mell Street building

Engaged Active Student Learning spaces first came to Auburn’s campus three years ago, using strategic furniture placement and technology to create a new learning environment that forces professors to teach differently and students to learn through collaboration. Wiebke Kuhn, College of Liberal Arts IT manager, said the classroom building committee first created these classrooms for the College of Liberal Arts to see how a different way of learning would affect students’ grades. “The reason for building that space came out of the classroom building committee,” Kuhn said.

​SGA raises suicide awareness and promotes QPR

India Way, budget and finance committee chair, and Trey Fields, Student Affairs committee chair, addressed the senate about suicide prevention training available to students called QPR. QPR stands for question, persuade, refer and offers training sessions to anyone who wants to learn how to detect signs someone may be having suicidal thoughts, according to Way.

Preview: Pump Up Your Heart Challenge

The third annual Pump Up Your Heart challenge returns to the Auburn Rec and Wellness Center this February. The month-long competition will have a kickoff event on Jan 31. from 5 to 6 p.m. and its grand finale on March 3 at Yoga Rave. The winners will be announced at Yoga Rave on March 3 this year.

Students take the 'Plunge' at the Auburn Rec

About 70 students piled around the Auburn Recreation and Wellness Center pool, waiting for the countdown to start. Aubie took his place on the diving board, leading the crowd in a "Bodda Getta" cheer. Three, two, one and the students plunged into the frigid water, taking the polar plunge at the Auburn Rec and Wellness Center on Tuesday night.

Recreation and Wellness Center to host Polar Plunge

The Polar Plunge will take place on Jan. 19 at the Auburn rec's pool facilities. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the plunge taking place at 5:45 p.m. The first 100 participants will receive a polar plunge T-shirt and all participants can have coffee or hot chocolate from Toomer's Coffee or pops from Steel City Pops.
