Auburn Announced New Basketball Coach

The Auburn Athletic Department has announced Tony Barbee will be the next head coach of the Auburn Men's Basketball team. "We are thrilled to welcome Tony Barbee into the Auburn Family," said Athletics Director Jay Jacobs in a press release Wednesday night. Barbee, 38, has been the head men's basketball coach at the University of Texas-El Paso for the past four years, compiling an 82-52 record and taking the Miners from 10th in Conference USA in 2006 to first in 2010. "Coach Barbee has a vision of competing for championships at Auburn, and the passion to get us there," Jacobs said in the press release. "He is a phenomenal coach, an outstanding recruiter and a fierce competitor." Barbee will be officially introduced as head coach Thursday in a press conference in the new Auburn Arena.

The No. 17 Women's Gymnastics team closed the Coliseum with a win, beating No. 20 Denver, 196.225-194.350.The meet was the final regular season event in the closing Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum and was also senior night for the gymnastics team.Senior Carmen Nelms, who has been training since she was 3 years old, said she felt this night was 18 years coming."It's kind of bittersweet because this season has been going really well, but you'd like to have your last season going this well," Nelms said.The Tigers swept the beam event, something head coach Jeff Thompson said didn't surprise him."We're at the point in practice now where they have to do wobble-free routines and they do that," Thompson said.

Men's golf struggles to compete without Stembridge

The Auburn Men's Golf team traveled to Laredo, Texas, to participate in the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club.The event, hosted by the University of Houston, was held March 5-6.Auburn was hoping for a clean tournament and strong finish for its first appearance in the three round, 54-hole tournament.Friday, however, sophomore John Stembridge fell ill and was pulled from the tournament, leaving the Tigers down a man for the first two rounds.Redshirt freshman Jackson Beindorf was flown in for the third round Saturday."It sucked," said sophomore Will McCurdy.
