Miss Auburn takes lead with 'Miracle Mile' Sunday

Children's Miracle Network is a non-profit organization, that, through donations, funds, medical care, research and education for children of all backgrounds with all types of diseases.

They are the reason Kimberly Freind, Miss Auburn University, is hosting "The Miracle Mile."

"The Miracle Mile" is a one-mile walk around Auburn's campus. Proceeds will benefit Children's Miracle Network and the Miss America Scholarship Fund.

"The Miss Auburn University Scholarship Pageant is a part of the Miss America Organization," Freind said. "The Miss America Organization supports Children's Miracle Network as its national platform. Therefore, I wanted to hold this walk as a way of supporting the national platform. 'The Miracle Mile' also allows me to promote my personal platform of preventing childhood obesity."

Emily Eason, a sophomore in animal sciences and aunt of two children with Cystic Fibrosis, is glad to see Auburn working with a charity that benefits children.

"I have worked extensively with the Cystic Fibrosis foundation to raise money and bring attention to the illnesses that ail so many children," Eason said.

The walk will take place Sunday, April 19.

It will begin outside of the Auburn University Student Center.

A kick-off event featuring Aubie and Miss Auburn University will start at 3:30 p.m and the walk will begin at 4 p.m.

Refreshments will be served after the walk, and door prizes will be given out.

"I think the walk is a great way to do something good for your organization through spirit points and raise money for a good cause at the same time," said Doug Leiser, a junior in aviation management.

Pre-registration ends at noon Friday, April 17.

It is $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 years old and under.

Registration on the day of the event will be $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 years old and under.
