Track and field visit Clemson Games

The Auburn Track and Field teams travel to Clemson for the Clemson Games this weekend.

Sophomore high jumper Ryan Fleck finished in third in the high jump at the University of Kentucky Invitational Jan. 16.

Fleck said the Clemson Games are a good tune-up for the SEC and NCAA indoor championships.

"During the indoor season we go up against our SEC competition," Fleck said. "At the end of the season we have the SEC Indoor championships and Clemson is a little preview."

Head coach Ralph Spry said some of the SEC schools in attendance will provide good competition.

"Mississippi State and South Carolina should be pretty tough competition," Spry said.

The indoor season consists of four meets before the SEC championships, which restricts the competioton.

"They limit the teams they let in," Spry said. "So I know all the teams that are going to be allowed to run in this competition are good Division I teams." Sophomore 60-meter sprinter Harry Adams said he is excited about going to Clemson and getting to compete against some of the top competition Spry talked about.

"We're in the SEC too, so they're no better than us," Adams said. "May the best manwin."

Adams finished third in the 60-meter dash at the Kentucky Invitational.

Spry said Auburn has some strong distance runners and sprinters on this year's squad, but needs some work in the field.

"We're a little bit weak in the field right now," Spry said. "We don't have quite the numbers there." Spry said the team is

working to become more balanced as a whole.

"Our women are a little bit more balanced right now than our men are," Spry said.

Spry said he is looking for a good weekend out of sophomore sprinter Marcus Rowland.

"He's an All-American and ran the third fastest time for a 19-year old," Spry said. "He's really eager and hungry to get it going."

The Games begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
