Auburn Rugby isn't limited to men this school year.
The Auburn Women's Rugby club team is in its first spring season.
There is no difference between the men's and women's game.
"We play 40 minutes, there are 15 players and same positions," said senior inside center Kelly McMullen.
Last weekend, in its second game of the season, the club welcomed the women's rugby club from Middle Tennessee State University.
Auburn won the game 34-0. Sophomore scrumhalf Mary
Ann Reynolds said the team played well.
"A lot of new teams tend to clump up," Reynolds said. "But we did a really good job of staying spread and wrapping up our tackles."
Sophomore prop Elena Hermans said a lot of players are playing in their first semester.
"More than half of this team started in spring semester," Hermans said.
Williams said the new players didn't bring the rest of the team down.
"To come out with that much intensity and really push the team is amazing," Hermans said. "We're almost like a family now."
Michele Yarbrough, associate collegiate women's director for USA Rugby South, said the team will become similar to a family.
"As a player there's no other camaraderie that you will ever experience outside of rugby," Yarbrough said.
Reynolds said the team has some work to do in its passing game.
"Our passing is just not strong enough yet," Reynolds said. "But we'll get there."
Yarbrough said women's rugby is one of the most exciting sports to watch.
"Even if you don't know what's going on, you can't help but get into it," Yarbrough said. "It has the pace of tennis and soccer because it's always going and has the excitement of football because of the tackles."
