Lady Tigers extend streak against Wildcats

The Auburn women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games Friday after sending the Wildcats packing, defeating Kentucky 4-1.

The first goal came in the 22nd minute on a set play from senior midfielder Katy Frierson to junior midfielder Jessica Rightmer.

"A lot of it depends on how the defense lines up, and they lined up perfectly so we could execute this one," Frierson said.

The team had been working on the play in practice with assistant coach Amy Berbary.

"We had been working on that free kick for the past few weeks with Amy Berbary," Rightmer said. "She had that all picked out. That was one of our really key set pieces. Katy just chipped it over the wall, I spun out wide, there was a space and she played it."

The second goal came in the 65th minute after a short corner and scrambling by Frierson, who lobbed the ball into the middle for senior defender Julie King's goal.

Less than four minutes later, Frierson set up the third goal by junior midfielder Ana Cate.

"Katy brought it down the right flank, Mary Coppet and I were both making the run right in the middle of the goal," Cate said. "It actually went straight to Mary, and Mary saw me running behind her and she just let it go right through her legs to my wide open goal."

The final goal by Auburn was from freshman forward Chelsea Gandy-Cromer in the 75th minute.

"We're really pleased with the way we played," said coach Karen Hoppa. "Obviously we're pleased with the result, but also pleased with the way we played. There were a couple periods of the game we weren't happy with: the first fifteen and the last fifteen. The rest of the game we were very good and very dominant."

Both Hoppa and Frierson said the team played well overall.

"We've been working a lot on just connecting passes, moving and just combining," Frierson said. "We had sprints where we played just great soccer. There were times when they dominated as well but I think we put together some good passing. It's fun to be able to finish like we are. It was a great game altogether."

The Tigers' next match is at home Sept. 25 against Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m.
