Auburn softball wins season opener against Alabama State

Auburn softball held its season opener Thursday night at Jane B. Moore field against Alabama State.

The Tigers scored six runs and forced the Hornets to a shutout.

Caitlin Schultze scored two runs, while Amber Harrison and Morgan Murphy each scored one.

The first two innings were score-less, but Auburn pulled ahead by one in the third and three more in fifth.

Lauren Guzman and Morgan Estell each brought home one run, with the Tigers scoring their last two runs in the sixth inning.

The Tigers are now 5-0 all-time against Alabama State. Last years meeting ended with a 12-1 victory in the All-Alabama Tournament in Birmingham.

This was the first game of the four-day Tiger Invitational tournament.

Auburn will host Appalachian State, Bowling Green, Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne and Wright State.

Auburn's 2012 schedule features 11 teams ranked in the top 25. The March 27 match-up against Alabama and the April 7 game against Tennessee will broadcast on ESPNU. The April 22 game against Arkansas will play on Sports South.
