Auburn to host first fashion week

New York Fashion Week may have passed, but Auburn Fashion Week has just begun.

"Auburn Fashion Week is a way to energize the community and showcase the designers here," said Beth Witten, owner of Blue Shoe. "There's no need to leave Auburn or Opelika for fashion; it's here,"

Auburn Fashion Week runs from March 1-9. A wrap-up show will be held on the last day of the event.

This is the first year Auburn Fashion Week has been done, Witten said.

"New York Fashion Week happens mid-February, and we kind of wanted to follow behind it. It's a natural progression from New York to Auburn," Witten said.

Auburn Fashion Week will showcase local boutiques' upcoming fashion lines.

"It will show off the hottest trends and the first looks of spring," Witten said.

Thursday, Spa Auburn will hold a skin care session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 5-8 p.m. Blue Shoe will host a preview party featuring trends from Starzz Boutique, Ellie Boutique and Spa Auburn. At 6:30 p.m. the first fashion show will begin at Blue Shoe.

Friday, Ellie Boutique will host a fashion show from 6-8 p.m. with door prizes, a free gift for everyone who spends more than $50 and 20 percent off items in the store.

"The fashion show will feature what's hot for the spring season and spring break. We will also incorporate shoes from Ellie Shoes," said Kelly Poole, owner of Ellie Boutique.

A wrap-up show will be held March 9 from 6-9 p.m. at Maestro 2300 with signature cocktails and a grand prize makeover package. Local patrons can enter to win door prizes throughout the week, and a random winner will be selected for the grand prize.

Julie Bunkley will be covering the events of Auburn Fashion Week through their Twitter, @AUFashionWeek, and their Facebook page, Auburn Fashion Week.
