We may not know the starting quarterback or the ins and outs of the depth chart, but we now know someone who won't be seeing any playing time in the near future.
Senior receiver DeAngelo Benton was suspended indefinitely from the team by coach Gene Chizik for violating an undisclosed team rule.
"We have standards and expectations that our football team is expected to uphold and when they do not abide by those, there are consequences," Chizik said in a statement released late Wednesday afternoon.
The 4-star recruit hasn't exactly fulfilled expectations since coming to Auburn in 2009.
With just 14 catches for 239 yards and one touchdown for his career, Benton's time at the Plains has been clouded by off-field troubles.
Benton was called to the stand in last spring's armed robbery trial of former teammate and fellow receiver Antonio Goodwin. During his testimony, Benton admitted to smoking synthetic marijuana, or "spice," which was legal at the time in question.
It didn't take long before his name was in the news again, this time in relation to a much more serious crime.
Police mentioned Benton's name in the hearing of Desmonte Leonard, the individual facing three counts of capital murder and two counts of second-degree assault after a shooting at an Auburn pool party earlier this summer.
Rumors spread that Benton had argued with Leonard before he opened fire, but witnesses disputed the allegations, saying he was not involved.
In Benton's absence, the pass game will depend primarily on Emory Blake and Philip Lutzenkirchen, with a combination of Travante Stallworth, Quan Bray, Trovon Reed and Sammie Coates to provide relief.
