It took extra innings in Mobile against Southern Miss Wednesday, March 20, but Kody Ortman's RBI single with two outs in the 11th helped Auburn baseball erase a three-run deficit and improve their record to 15-6 on the season.
Losing 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Auburn's Cullen Wacker hit a three-run double to tie the game after Auburn loaded the bases on a error and two walks by Southern Miss pitcher Jake Drehoff.
"Wacker sat on a fastball and absolutely smoked that ball," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "Then Kody came through with a big hit today too. I am really proud of our team. We didn't have anything going. This was a game where we were getting stuffed for most of the game. Our guys had a lot of energy in the dugout, we had some fun with it and we found a way to win tonight."
In the 11th inning, Garrett Cooper led off for the Tigers and advanced to second on a Ryan Tella sacrifice bunt. Patrick Savage was then intentionally walked and a foul-out by Damek Tomscha put Ortman at bat with two outs. Ortman's hit to left field scored Cooper and the game was over.
"It's special to come out here and get a win, especially with a clutch hit like I did," Wacker, who is from Mobile, said. "This is a good team win and gives us some momentum going into Baton Rouge."
The Tigers look to improve their record against conference foe LSU March 22, at 7 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
