Women's swimming finishes strong

Auburn Women's Swimming finished 13th with 87 points at the NCAA Tournament Saturday in Indianapolis. Georgia won the title, tying Auburn for the 3rd-most championships all-time.

The Auburn women also added 19 All-America honors to their all-time total of 2,213. All-America awards are given to swimmers who finish 16th or higher in their event.

In another brilliant NCAA Tournament performance, Junior Olivia Scott brought back four All-America honors, tying her total from last year. One difference from last year was her victory in the 100 fly, Auburn's 33rd individual NCAA title.

Scott joined teammates Hannah Riordan, Emily Boss, and Megan Fonteno to win another All-America honor in the 400 Freestyle with a time of 3:16:54 and an 11th place finish.

Another major contributor, Bos went five-for-five in her events by winning All-America awards in several relays and individual races.

Senior Katie Gardcocki added her third straight All-America honor in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:09:39 and a 15th place finish. Including this year's awards, Gardcocki finished her Auburn career with five All-America honors.

Micah Lawrence, yet another graduating senior, finished with two All-America honors for a total of nine over her time at Auburn. Lawrence came in 14th overall in the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:09:74.

During the season, women's swimming won every meet, defeating Florida and Texas A&M on their way to a 5th place finish in the SEC tournament. Though head coach Brett Hawke is pleased with the overall success of the season and the effort of his athletes, he admits to some disappointment in the weekend's results. Over the past decade, Auburn's men and women's swimming program has evolved to the point that an NCAA title is always the goal.

Men's swimming will defend their NCAA title today in Indianapolis after placing second in the SEC tournament, the first time in 16 years they have not won the SEC outright.

Though the season did not end with a NCAA championship, women's swimming upheld Auburn's reputation as a powerhouse in the pool, and strong performances from returners like Bos and Scott, who won or helped win nine of Auburn's 16 All-America honors this weekend, have fans and coaches looking hopefully into the future of the program.
