A man found dead under the bridge at the South College Street exit along Interstate 85, Saturday, Nov. 8, has been identified as John Michael Maines, 54, of Tennessee.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris announced Maines identification in a statement released at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
"Maines was positively identified through fingerprints," Harris said. "The cause of death per a postmortem exam indicate he died of natural causes due to liver, heart, kidney and gastrointestinal problems."
Harris pronounced Maines dead at the scene at 12:15 p.m., after police and paramedics responded to a report of someone lying beside I-85 at 11:45 a.m.
"There doesn't appear to be any foul play," said Capt. Will Mathews with the Auburn Police Division.
According to Harris, Maines' family were notified in Pennsylvania, and they stated he was a traveler, probably on his way to Florida.
Maines will be buried in Pennsylvania.
