Director Anna Ferens’ documentary of Polish biochemist Waclaw Syzbalski’s life was shown in a screening in Thach Hall on Tuesday, April 28, at 6 p.m.
The documentary titled “The Essence of Life” shows the connection between Syzbalski’s research and the historical moments he witnessed, such as the Russian invasion of Poland in 1939, according to Ferens.
"When I talked to him I decided he was a good person for a documentary because of the historical background in his life," Ferens said. "During his time in eastern Europe it wasn’t easy to be a scientist."
The screening was organized by members of the Cultural Music Society.
Jelani Moore, Cultural Music Society member and junior in media studies, said the director wanted to show the film in Alabama.
“She wanted to show it in Alabama and came to Auburn," Moore said.
Civil engineering professor Andrzej Nowak, whose students were also organizers of the event, said he hopes the event will inspire his students.
"I thought this would be a great example to students of how Syzbalski did something outstanding," Nowak said.
