Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign to start June 30

The Auburn Police Division is participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign to reduce drunken driving from June 30-July 5.

According to Sgt. Jameson Presley with APD, police officers will be more visible during the campaign, and there will be more officers on the roads.

Presley said there will not be checkpoints in Auburn, however, there could be some statewide.

"Officers will be out, looking for typical behaviors of drunk driving," Presley said.

Presley said behaviors include weaving on the road and committing traffic violations.

Presley said drunken driving is a hazard to everybody on the road, not just the driver themselves. He said people driving under the influence could even harm people walking on sidewalks if they drive off the road.

"Your faculties are inhibited because of alcohol, you don't need to get behind the wheel," Presley said.

Presley said the goal of the campaign is to reduce the number of people driving under the influence on the road, the number of accidents and to ultimately save lives.

He said he wants the campaign to help people think to call a cab or have a sober driver, instead of drinking and driving.

He said he hopes the campaign will have a lasting impact on the community.
