Cross-country shines in Furman Classic

Auburn men’s and women’s cross country participated in the 3rd Annual Furman Classic on Saturday in Greenville, South Carolina.

The women took the meet with a 30 point lead over hosts Furman and rival Georgia. Sophomore Molly McKenna and freshman Brenda Kigen finished in the top three to lead the Tigers, who had five of the first 11 finishers in the race.

“Overall I’m delighted with the team’s performance,” head coach Mark Carroll said. “The girls are running extremely well and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do for the rest of the season.”

The men scored 46 points for a second place finish behind No. 18  Furman, who scored 16 points. Senior Redatu Semeon finished in fifth-place, covering the 8k course in 24:36.68. Sophomores Wesley Pectol (eighth), Coleman Churitch (10th), Kevin Wyss (11th) and Mitchell Gomez (12th ) followed behind the top-5 for the Tigers.

“The men’s team ran a smart race and came through the field strongly to earn second place,” said Carroll. “ We had a lot of big personal bests with the men which is exciting moving forward.”

The Tigers will run again Sept. 26 at the Panorama Farms Invite in Charlottesville, Virginia..
